A Must for March!
Join The National Centre for Craft & Design in Sleaford this March for a varied yet exciting programme of events.
On Saturday 3 March, visitors can watch artist Julie Vernon at work as she demonstrates in the shop how to make her contemporary handcrafted mosaics using a mix of materials from vintage porcelain to natural marble and slate.
The Hub Writers invite you to an evening celebrating the spoken word inspired by the ‘broken relationship’ on Tuesday 6 March from 7pm. You can bring your own original writing (prose or poetry) and join in with the group or simply come along and listen.
The Centre is screening the film Oranges and Sunshine (15) which stars Emily Watson as a social worker from Nottingham who uncovered one of the most significant social scandals in recent times that the British Government kept hidden. The film starts at 7pm on Thursday 8 March and entry is free with a pay bar. This compliments the Roof Gallery exhibition ‘Transplantation’.
Take part in a thought-provoking and engaging visual and live musical experience on Friday 9 March at 7.30pm. Using recently discovered footage from the Media Archive of Central England, the ‘Past Lives’ film includes local images of everyday events happening in Lincolnshire and the Midlands from the 1930s to the 1970s and captured on small format 8mm and 16mm movie cameras by local people.
In true silent screen fashion there will be live accompanying music composed specifically for the film by renowned musicians Theo Travis (flute, sax) and Dave Sturt (fretless bass).They will perform with guest musicians Deirdre Benscik (cello) and Clare Bhabra (violin) from the renowned Sinfonia ViVA. Tickets cost £9 and £7 for concessions and you must be aged 16 years or above to attend.
Adults and students can get creative by joining the March workshops which will feature Phiona Richards and Anne Menary as they guide you through creating quirky and functional pieces and postcards from old treasured objects and vintage materials.
