The National Centre Presents …
14 January – 19 February 2010
Roof Gallery

Each year artists and artists groups, from across Lincolnshire apply for the opportunity to exhibit in the Roof Gallery at The National Centre for Craft & Design.  Selected participants then embark on a six month development process, working with the artistic team at the National Centre in order to curate and stage their own prestigious exhibition.

Local textile artists Joan Richardson and Janet Wain took up this opportunity and have used the process to explore the influence of the written word on textile practice.  They have taken the poem “Blue Garden” by Rowland Fade as their inspiration and used materials such as paper, paint, natural found materials and fabric to express the poem’s emotions- sorrow, regret, learning and ultimately moving on -  as tangible textile works.

Janet and Joan’s work compliment each other very well.  Janet has a painterly approach whilst Joan often works in three dimensional using mixed media techniques.  As Janet says: “we are delighted to have been chosen for the annual National Centre Presents exhibition.  This opportunity has helped us develop our working practices, taking them in new directions with a fresh approach.  It gives us the chance to stage an exhibition in a larger space that we hope will be seen by a broader audience”.
